personal hubs and advertising’s future

Tim Brunelle, Social Media Breakfast MSPFriday, while baking under an unreasonable sun, I was one of the three hundred watching Steve Borsch and Tim Brunelle present a Social Media Breakfast MSP. Here’s Borsch’s presentation and here’s the rundown of Brunelle’s.

The presentations were great, the bacon was delicious (grilled… who knew?) and the heat was relentless. As always, it was enjoyable. I’ve been to two, so take that as you will.

Borsch quickly and smoothly covered a number of tools to better organize your many different forms of online media. One of the tools he emphasized was Posterous, where you can email from anywhere to one account and automatically post to services like Flickr, Facebook, Vimeo and others.

Brunelle, as expected, casually relayed a well-researched breakdown of the outlook for advertising. His main points are great but I particularly enjoyed “Advertising is not dead. Social Media’s keeping it alive.

Advertisers don’t know how to use social tools the same way they didn’t know how to use television. Like commercials before it, someone will find a formula that works and it will become so ubiquitous 98% of consumers will immediately try to avoid it.

Using tools like Wordpress or Posterous, everyone’s a broadcaster. With an audience of three, three hundred or three million, everyone has a voice. Advertising will find a way into that conversation as soon as they stop taking themselves so seriously.

Thanks to Rick Mahn for another great event. The management of more than three hundred online savvy patrons and everything else is an impressive feat. Thanks to Steve Borsch and Tim Brunelle as well. It’s always great to have insights into the “thought leaders” (for those playing, take that shot) of MSP.
