Good Morning, Campers

AIGA Design CampConsidering I’m almost a full week late in this recap post, I’ll keep it brief. AIGA Design Camp – Minnesota was great.

Okay… maybe not that brief.

Girlfriend and I made our way up to Nisswa (an enormous metropolis) Friday morning. That day, Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. fame, presented, there was a designer-specific accounting workshop, a dinner and a mixer with sponsor booths and drinks.

I can’t extol Draplin enough. His presentation revolved around most of his incredible work and was peppered with projects he did on his own time for fun or more for adoration toward the client than financial reward. (Awesome.)

As luck would have it, I was able to share a table with him at the dinner. He’s thoughtful and genuine, which wasn’t surprising but very welcome. I didn’t have a chance to talk his ear off about his process (geometric or by feel?) but I’m glad to have met him, even briefly.

The second day, DJ Stout presented many great projects (save for maybe the Lexington Blue Horse, IMHO). Later, the Geek Girls won the day with their social tools discussion. The Sheehan Photo workshop was intriguing and Ellen Lupton rocked the house. It was a long, inspiring day.

Hush impressed on Sunday and then we made our way back. I’d do it all again but would spend more time at the networking and social events. Circumstances didn’t allow this time. Thanks AIGA for organizing it all.
