Facebook is iPad-friendly, nothing else

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Everyone should now have the new Facebook design. I’ll get to my opinion in a moment, but there’s one thing the new design is: iPad (or other touch device) ready. You can love it or hate it but you can’t deny that.

At Inizio Creative, I wrote a post about how design will have to change according to these new handheld devices. You don’t necessarily have to read it (though, I’d selfishly love if you did) because it’s to the letter how the new Facebook functions.

Hovers are eradicated; images are reduced in size, texture and the page loads faster (< 2 seconds is impressive given all the junk they’ve loaded on the homepage); and there’s distinctive areas for double-touch zooming. Generally, the only Flash is their video player or unnecessary apps. (more…)

Good Morning, Campers

AIGA Design CampConsidering I’m almost a full week late in this recap post, I’ll keep it brief. AIGA Design Camp – Minnesota was great.

death of IE6?

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Internet Explorer 6 is the bane of many a web designer’s existence. It supports CSS more in theory than practice and lingers like a herpes sore on the market (that’s not graphic enough).

with apple goes the world

Today, like most tech nerds or hipsters, I was engrossed in some pretty heavy auto-refresh watching. For others, WWDC’s keynote was covered on any number of tech blogs.

To summarize, Apple upgraded their Macbook Pro line, beefed up their iPhone (including video) and refreshed their flagship OS into a smaller, faster and more efficient wild feline (metaphorically). What does that mean? (more…)

autoreply: out of office, indefinitely

Monday, June 1st, 2009

The phrase “you should do that on your own time” confuses me. Who allotted time and determined ownership? What part of my day is not “my time”? For many, this idea is archaic.

Before I get ahead of myself, there are many fields that require scheduled hours. Mechanics, dentists, teachers, etc. rely on person-person or person-machine, analog interaction. Many can communicate and work digitally from anywhere Online (still capitalized?). (more…)

notes from a digital native

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Use of the internet is an intracohort shift. Reliance on the internet is an intercohort shift. Thus, articles like this one are written to try and help those in power understand those that will eventually replace them.

In honor of the observed-habits-of-a-generation-I-don’t-get trend, I thought I’d create my own list. I don’t speak for my generation but here are some notes from a digital native: (more…)

why the FB rework means nothing

twibookFirst, let me bring focus to a bold few, Ben, @KatLikeWrites, Alauna, Jenski and TinkTrace (longtime friend of the Chasm staff) all weighed in. The rest of you were probably busy being inattentive friends, disgruntled coworkers or panhandlers. (All worthy distractions.)

Check the post for their full comments but here’s a paraphrase: (more…)
